Islesboro Residence

Location: Islesboro, Maine
Team: Aman Architecture

This 70-acre property spans the width of a narrow island. The property is characterized by a healthy maritime forest and views of the mainland and open ocean. The plan highlighted the contrast between light and dark and open and enclosed spaces while also accentuating the natural features of this island landscape.

The Farmhouse was expanded upon with a solarium and barn that stepped in both in plan and in section. This “stepping” defines a series of terraces and gardens with views of the coast. The driveway was reconfigured to wind between the forest and meadow and reveal the Farmhouse in glimpses as one approached. The owners prefer walking and emphasize that cars should be out of view.
