University of New Brunswick, Health and Social Innovation Center
Location: St. John, New Brunswick, Canada
Team: Solomon Cordwell Buenz and Acre Architects
The new Health and Social Innovation Centre at the University of New Brunswick is an interdisciplinary health science facility aims to facilitate collaboration amongst various health related groups and anchor this college campus.
A plinth defines the building entrance and the western edge of the campus quad. The quad sits atop a subterranean access corridor that connects several campus buildings.
The grounds flanking the north and south sides of the new building reinforce the collaborative health focus of the facility. A plaza provides socialization and relaxation, a first nations healing garden invites contemplation, and a multi-purpose yard can function as a volleyball court in warm months or be flooded in the winter for recreational ice skating.
